Doug and Gav here with the look of two men who’ve just recovered their CO2 ready for it to be reused in future beer production…

We've just taken a major step forward in our quest to make Tempest into the most sustainable and carbon responsible brewery it can be by installing a CO2 recovery unit. This is a genius piece of kit that promotes the circular use of a brewery's own CO2. It'll come as no surprise that breweries are heavy consumers and producers of carbon dioxide; but by recovering the CO2 from our fermentation we are drastically reducing both our emissions and our reliance on CO2 in our production process.

Without getting too nerdy, this bit of kit from Dalum collects, cleans, liquifies and stores the CO2 ready for use in all stages of our future beer production, they estimate that a 20,000 barrel brewery could recapture 50 tons of CO2 emissions and save 100 tons of emission by not purchasing CO2 from gas suppliers. This is equivalent to taking more than 32 cars off the road*.

Why doesn't every brewery do it, I hear you ask? Unsurprisingly the answer is cost. But Tempest has always existed to do more than just make beer... 'how we make' is just as important as what we make and keeping our production processes as sustainable and responsible has always been our modus operandi.
